Surface air pressure–based reconstruction of tropical cyclones affecting Hong Kong since the late nineteenth century

By using instrumental surface air pressure (SAP) records for 1885–2017 at Hong Kong (HK) station, SAP data 1951–2016 66 stations over mainland China and modern tropical cyclones (TCs) of 1951–2017 derived from the Best Tracks (BT) dataset Northwest Pacific, an objective identification method (OIM) TCs is developed. Taking HK station as example, general distance detectable landing thresholds are determined by utilizing correlation between metrics those each site all 392 real TC processes during period 1951–2016. Then, a long series affecting reconstructed applying daily mean 24-h difference to observed whole stage. The misjudgment this OIM about 10%, it provides homogeneous area 1885–2017. annual shows visible decreasing trend 1885 2017, with more obvious reduction occurring after early 1960s. Specifically, 10 years 1994–2003 had smallest number TCs. This SAP-based developed in study potentially applicable other areas.
